106 W Commerce Community Survey

What does this building mean to you?

106 W Commerce, formerly the Jesse R. Dawson State Jail was constructed in 1995, and in operation until 2013. Thousands of women and men convicted of low-level, non-violent offenses were incarcerated in this building during its short time in operation. The building is located on the west side of Downtown Dallas, and across the street from the Frank Crawley County Court and Detention Facilities. After the State Jail was decommissioned, the building has sat vacant on the banks of the Trinity River for almost 7 years.

How would you like to feel and what would you like to do in this neighborhood or in this building in the future?

Last year, Trinity Park Conservancy purchased the property at 106 W Commerce with the intention of transforming it into a community resource and public space; a place of gathering, healing and inclusion.

106 W Commerce will become a part of Harold Simmons Park and a key feature in the Park’s East Overlook area connecting downtown Dallas with new park amenities and the natural features of the Trinity River.

The property is located along a stretch of Riverfront Blvd that is currently cut off from Downtown on one side by I-35E, and cut off from the Trinity River on the other by a 35 ft. high levee.
